To celebrate the final setting of the summer sun, New York-based arts and performance initiative BOFFO invites acclaimed art photographer and Document contributor Wolfgang Tillmans, glam-pop performer Ssion, and city dwellers alike to Fire Island for its second annual Fire Island Performance Festival this weekend, August 26-28, 2016. Founded in 2009, the non-profit organization acts as a platform for interdisciplinary arts and cultural exchange, supporting emerging artists, hosting exhibitions, and engaging the tri-state area’s creative community. In keeping with this mission, the event is committed to showcasing a remarkably diverse group of artists to the public. Last year’s inaugural festival saw the likes of Mykki Blanco, Colin Self, La’Fem Ladosha, and Juliana Huxtable performing on the shores of the historic summer destination. Among those scheduled to appear this year are video and installation artist Xavier Cha, drag superstar Pearl Liaison, opera-metal composer M. Lamar, and Fragile, the musical venture of Tillmans, whose track “Device Control” recently garnered mainstream attention on Frank Ocean’s visual album, “Endless.” Fragile involves musicians from three continents in varying constellations and was originally founded in 1983. Today, 33 years later, Juan Pablo Echeverri, Kyle Combs, Jay Pluck, Tom Roach, and Tim Knapp will join Tillmans to perform original music. The event will also feature a TELFAR pop-up shop as well as an intimate dinner hosted by Casey Spooner, with all proceeds of the evening supporting BOFFO’s local artist residency program.
