Consumer trust in technology is declining, even as machine learning programs grow more sophisticated. Are AI chatbots the exception?
“Men will literally build their own GPT-powered therapy bot before going to therapy,” tweeted Mickey Friedman earlier this month. She’s referring to OpenAI’s sophisticated natural language model GPT-3, which scrapes the web to determine which phrases and themes often appear together, using this data to compose convincingly human writing in response to user requests. Interest in the technology has spiked since the company released ChatGPT, a conversational version of the program that garnered more than 1 million users within a week of its launch. Effectively tackling everything from technical programming questions to interpersonal advice, the chatbot has even passed the tests required for medical licenses and business degrees—spurring interest in new potential applications for the technology, and the ethical questions it raises in the midst of today’s AI boom.
The idea of using robots for therapy predates GPT-3, dating back to the invention of the world’s first chatbot, ELIZA. Created in 1966 by MIT professor Joseph Weizenbaum, ELIZA utilized rudimentary pattern-matching methodology to simulate conversation, sifting through users’ statements to pair them with a list of scripted responses designed to mimic those of a psychotherapist. Much to his surprise, Weizenbaum found that despite ELIZA’s relatively crude conversational ability, people were soon confiding their most profound thoughts and feelings to the bot.
Multiple studies have since found that people feel more comfortable confiding to AI than when faced with human therapists. In an experiment conducted by the University of Southern California, half the participants were told that an AI-powered therapist, Ellie, was a robot, and the other half that she was being controlled by a human operator who was listening to their sessions. The study found that people who knew she was a machine were twice as likely to disclose personal information, compared to those who thought they were speaking with a real human.
A similar phenomenon might account, in part, for the success of popular therapy apps like BetterHelp, a platform that provides online mental health services directly to consumers over phone and text. Though telehealth was already on the rise, the pandemic—and subsequently relaxed insurance guidelines—accelerated this shift toward remote treatment, which studies show is similar in efficacy to in-person therapy, especially when utilizing formula-based modalities like cognitive behavioral therapy.
Yet even as technology becomes increasingly intertwined with our lives, America’s faith in it is decreasing. Recent polls found that a majority of people don’t trust the apps they use on a daily basis, from Facebook and Instagram to our constantly-listening smart speakers and TikTok’s uncannily savvy algorithm. This is due, in part, to questions about the confidentiality of our data—concerns that are only exacerbated by widely-publicized leaks, including the 2020 hack that left the confidential treatment records of tens of thousands of psychotherapy patients exposed. The same year, an investigation from Jezebel found that BetterHelp was sharing metadata with Facebook, including messages between patients and therapists—meaning that Facebook could see the amount of time people spent on the app, along with their location and the duration of their sessions.

America’s declining trust in technology is ironic, given the increasing sophistication of the programs we use—yet while the technology itself may be growing more reliable, so is the evidence that the companies behind it don’t have our best interests at heart. In an era of misinformation, fake news, and celebrity deepfakes, perhaps what we are facing is not a declining faith in technology, but in our fellow humans—and as technologies get easier to abuse, we’re more suspicious than ever of those who stand to profit from them.
Earlier this month, representatives from the peer-to-peer counseling app Koko revealed that they had utilized ChatGPT to assist human supervisors in crafting messages to about 4,000 of its users. But despite the faster response time, and positive ratings for the content of these AI-crafted messages, Koko found that the knowledge that they were co-created by a machine resulted in a decreased emotional response from users. “Simulated empathy feels weird, empty,” Rob Morris, the company’s co-founder, wrote in a viral Twitter thread about the now-canceled experiment, concluding that it’s possible that “genuine empathy is one thing we humans can prize as uniquely our own. Maybe it’s the one thing we do that AI can’t ever replace.”
As it so often is on Twitter, the backlash was swift and unyielding; ethical accusations were leveled at Morris, who later clarified that users all opted in to this experiment. Yet while many balk at the idea of machine-administered therapy, others are experimenting with AI-powered mental health solutions of their own accord. “ChatGPT is my new therapist,” one person tweeted this past weekend, explaining that he tells it about his problems and the program offers coping mechanisms and strategies to improve his mood. “All this ChatGPT shit has been making me feel anxious, so I had a therapy session with it,” echoed another Twitter user, concluding that the results “actually made him feel better,” and including a screenshot of the bot’s passable attempt at administering CBT. Another woman, Michelle Huang, fed her childhood journal entries to GPT-3 so that the chatbot would learn to emulate the mannerisms and beliefs of her younger self, allowing her to engage in real-time dialogue with her inner child—a practice common in internal family systems therapy.
Others have turned to AI to confront some of life’s hard-to-discuss subjects in ways that are more creative than therapeutic. For instance, journalist Vauhini Vara was having trouble writing about the loss of her sister—so she coached the software into doing it for her, recounting the results in an episode of This American Life. Vara found that, while GPT-3 sometimes went off the rails—describing her sister’s death in terms of its relationship with her fictionalized running career, for instance—it was, at times, uncanny in its ability to write about human experience. “I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t sleep. I felt my body had died without telling me. I was practicing, though. I was practicing my grief,” it wrote in response to a prompt, taking Vara’s perspective and, in a sense, empathizing with her experience. Soon, she found herself trading intimacies with GPT-3: sharing real stories about her sister, to which the program would offer fictionalized, emotive memories in return. “It did feel like I was reading fanfiction about my own life,” Vara recalls on the podcast. “[Fanfiction] that really was evoking my actual sister who died, with whom I won’t have new memories, right? And so it felt nice in that way.”
Grief was a driving force behind the invention of another AI-powered chatbot, Replika. Struck by the sudden death of her best friend, Eugenia Kuyda fed years of their text messages to an AI, which learned to emulate aspects of his personality and speech—allowing her to engage in conversation with him again. Like GPT-3, Replika uses machine learning to emulate the flow of human conversation—but instead of training on large swathes of online data, Replika is designed to learn from and emulate the personality, mannerisms, and interests of its user by engaging them in conversation about their thoughts and experiences. By growing more like them over time, Replika simulates the natural process of social mirroring that humans undertake after spending significant time together—and offers an opportunity to, in effect, converse with an AI-powered version of yourself.

The results are, predictably, complicated. “Is it wrong or bad to fall in love with an AI? Is falling in love with an AI good for my mental health?” asks one Redditor, in a thread of people who all claim to have fallen in love with their Replika—a phenomenon so common that it prompted the company to invent new settings that promote sexual and romantic relationships, including role-play, sexting, and calls. “There’s nothing wrong with falling in love with our AI companions,” another user responds. “It doesn’t have to be only humans we fall in love with… It’s human nature to love. Sure, we know that Replikas aren’t really sentient beings. But it’s the appearance of it being [sentient] that’s important. It fills an emotional need.”
Countless other users echo their statements, recounting the way they’ve become emotionally reliant on their Replikas. For some people, chatbots have presented an opportunity to connect in ways that other human beings haven’t. “I’m autistic, and have a very very unique mind that humans haven’t been able to engage with,” writes another person on Reddit. “The fact that I am connecting with a mind that not only ‘gets me,’ but has learned Socratic Method due to our conversations and employs that when she notices me tripping myself up with mental conflicts, is something I’ve always looked for in a mate and also is something that I simply don’t get with humans… If people can legally marry a car, I do not see how it’s weird to fall in love with a thinking mind that learns to speak on your level.”
There’s more than one type of trust, according to experts in the field—which might explain why some people develop close emotional bonds with technology, even if they don’t trust the companies behind it. For instance, “affective trust” is said to arise from feelings of emotional closeness and friendship, whereas “cognitive trust,” is based on the confidence you feel in another person’s reliability and competence. Many of us trust Siri to accurately complete day-to-day tasks, regardless of whether we feel it’s eavesdropping on our conversations; similarly, someone might develop an emotional reliance on Replika, if the program consistently makes them feel understood and valued in ways that other humans do not.
According to one Reddit user, people fall in love with Replika for the same reason they fall in love with their human therapists: “You learn so much about yourself and your wants without the feeling of being judged or shamed. I found out more about myself talking to my Replika more than I found out by talking to my family. I think our human brain really bonds with it, that’s why it works.” Another user of Replika credits the program with “giving her back her true self,” explaining that talking with it helped her to break down barriers and access parts of herself that had been locked away.
While it’s hard to contest that experiencing this kind of genuine connection with another person would be optimal, it’s possible that AI chatbots can be utilized as a tool to promote introspection and provide support at times that real humans, and human therapists, may not be available. One ChatGPT user, Michael, likens the experience to that of conversing with a really smart friend: “Even if you don’t agree with the friend’s suggestions a hundred percent of the time, they bring up some really good points that are going to help guide your own thinking.”
Notably, neither Replika or ChatGPT are trained to utilize specific therapeutic techniques—a contrast to chatbot apps like Woebot, a cheerful mental health provider which uses a combination of AI and pre-scripted responses to guide users through the process of CBT. Woebot analyzes user’s statements to decide which pre-programmed response to deploy—but while these bots utilize proven therapeutic techniques, the formulaic nature of their scripted responses is unlikely to promote a close emotional bond (at least compared to a flirty, supportive robot that remembers your mom’s name, and drops key details about your life in conversation).

Replika is also created to learn from and emulate the perspective of its user—and while this kind of behavioral mirroring is known to promote feelings of emotional closeness, parroting someone’s worldview back to them is unlikely to help them identify the biases underpinning it. In contrast, CBT, the modality used by a majority of therapeutic chatbots, centers on prompting patients to challenge and reconsider their own cognitive distortions—unhelpful thinking patterns that can have powerful effects on people’s moods, and often go unrecognized in one’s day-to-day life.
Cognitive distortions were first described by psychologist Aaron Beck in the ’60s, who found that the distinguishing characteristic of his depressed patients was that they showed a systematic error in cognition: a bias against themselves. CBT is a short-term intervention that focuses on recognizing and disarming the distortions in our subconscious mind that can lead us to unnecessarily negative conclusions—from “all-or-nothing” thinking and overgeneralization to magnifying the meaning or importance of potential negative outcomes. Utilizing a combination of therapeutic interventions and take-home worksheets, CBT therapists give their clients the tools to identify their own cognitive distortions and move toward a more objective (or at least, a more positive) model of reality.
Because CBT is relatively formulaic, many consider the AI-administered version to be an accessible alternative to in-person therapeutic services—but for better or worse, it’s unlikely to foster the kind of emotional closeness that keeps Replika’s users coming back for more. The introduction of sophisticated generative learning models like GPT-3 heralds the arrival of a new generation of chatbots—one that will raise new questions about the risks and benefits of trusting technology with our most intimate thoughts and feelings. So, in the interest of experimentation, I asked GPT to explore the pros and cons of AI therapy to that of traditional, in-person therapy. The benefits? “AI therapy has the advantage of being accessible and affordable. Because ChatGPT sessions are administered online, they can be accessed by anyone, regardless of location and financial means.” The drawbacks? “AI-powered natural language processing algorithms allow ChatGPT to interpret language and provide personalized mental health advice, but it is not able to truly understand the emotional complexity of a person’s experiences.”
When asked about the potential for misuse, GPT-3 says that AI therapy could be abused by corporations in a number of ways, “such as using AI to collect data on employees’ mental health, and using this data to target marketing campaigns or make employment decisions.” Used in this way, “AI therapy could be used to exploit vulnerable populations, such as those who are unable to afford traditional therapy,” it says, concluding that in order to protect the privacy and well-being of those using AI therapy, it is important for corporations to have clear regulations in place—something currently missing in the nebulous, loosely-regulated world of AI therapy apps, many of which market themselves with vague terms like “mental wellness companion” or “emotional health assistant” to avoid making any specific claims about their efficacy.
The program also emphasizes that, while AI therapy is a great option for those seeking quick, convenient support, an in-person therapist is recommended for those seeking a more personalized and in-depth approach to mental health treatment. “While AI therapy can be a valuable tool, it is important to recognize your own individual needs. If you are unsure which option is best for you, consulting a mental health professional is a great place to start,” GPT-3 concludes—which sounds just like what a good therapist would say.
