The intimate anniversary dinner, hosted by Nick Vogelson, Sarah Richardson, and Sofia Prantera, brought contributors and creatives together in the spirit of collaboration
In a Brutalist building in Central London on Wednesday evening, Document and Aries celebrated their respective tenth anniversaries with an intimate dinner. At Toklas—the first restaurant of Frieze founders Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover—the green leather banquets, reclaimed iroko tabletops, and vintage posters that feed the venue’s retro feel were punctuated by the warmth of holiday decor and stacks of Document’s Winter/Resort 2023 issue.
The restaurant takes its name from Alice B. Toklas, who with her partner Gertrude Stein, converted her pre-war apartment in Paris into an art salon, where creatives and intellectuals regularly gathered. This dinner upheld that same essence: Document’s editor-in-chief Nick Vogelson, creative and fashion director Sarah Richardson, and Aries’s creative director Sofia Prantera were joined by friends and treasured contributors. Creatives of all disciplines—Juergen Teller, Venetia Scott, Richard Bush, Aivita Muze, Alice Lefons, Rachel Elliston, Paul Hanlon, Natalie Hand, Nicki Bidder, Róisín Murphy, Laurence Ellis, Jeremy Deller, Tom Macklin, Jodie Barnes, Kiki Willems, Tom Bailey, Amber Olson, Dovile Drizyte, Gary Card, Jane How, Mimi Xu, Jonas Gloer, Sylvia Farago, Lucia Pieroni, Christopher and Tammy Kane, Giovanni and Amber Testino, and Will Sharpe among them—reflected on past projects and planted seeds for those of the future.
A spirit of collaboration characterized the night, central to the identities of both Document and Aries. “[Collaboration is] almost like a game,” said Prantera in our latest issue, likening this sort of cultural exchange to trying on an aesthetic—to dressing up. Guests departed with a piece from the Aries x Document collection: a material bit of that spirit, to inspire and to carry outwards.
