Neil Young and Dolly Parton make losing hope sound strangely comforting
Our daily lives have been radically uprooted. As we persist through the era of COVID-19, these departures from our daily experiences, environments, and socializations have created a communal sense of disorientation. Despite our tendencies to bask in sorrow and long for life to return to ‘normal,’ New York based musician Caroline Rose offers an alternative, musical approach: songs for when all hope is lost, a 12-track playlist to console you this weekend and beyond.
Rose is no stranger to feelings of confusion or isolation. “These are the songs I listen to when I really am just at my wits’ end. I think it’s a good time to share them because a lot of people are going through some tough times right now, including myself,” she said. “I’ve been listening to these songs a lot lately and they make me feel like I’m being consoled by an old friend.” Feeling lost often parallels fear of solitude. However, if anything has risen out of the current global circumstances, it is that nobody is grappling with these emotions alone. With a soundtrack that embodies the universal experience of losing hope, Caroline Rose offers sonic solace for these complex times.
