Hedi Slimane parted from his usual aesthetic in Celine’s Fall 2019 show. While maintaining his commitment to leather jackets, glittering gold sequins, and sleek suits, Slimane softened his looks with culottes and airy blouses. Pulling inspiration from the house’s archives, Slimane emerged from his research with current takes on Celine’s ’70s silhouettes. Slimane cinched skirts with horsebit belts and adorned necklines with delicate gold chains, evoking the French bourgeoisie of the past, refreshed and refined. The earth-tone palette paired with the gold horse bit belts brought romantic ideas of spending fall outside in thigh-high, shearling-lined boots.
Slimane also balanced delicate dresses with aviators and the occasional stiff hat. For those interested in more office-friendly looks, there was a classic pin-striped suit and chunky knits to go over more straight-forward button-up tops. Alternatively, the closing look—a black suit with a sequined blouse, good for any office party when it is chilly outside—embraced both the Slimane we we know and the new direction he is moving towards.
