A slideshow, exclusive to Document, features works from Hershman Leeson’s Phantom Limb series (1985-87). Like the rest of her work, the photomontages explore provocative questions about gender, technology, and identity. Women’s bodies merge with mechanical devices; heads become television screens and camera lenses and legs unwind into electrical cords. The images speak to both the physical and psychological demands of technology that feel as relevant today as they were 30 years ago. Aren’t we all cyborgs now?

Lynn Hershman Leeson: Origins of the Species is on view at Bridget Donahue through April 5 2015.
