Berlin-based photographer Alexander Fischer celebrates queer aesthetics and community at the weekend’s 2024 edition

There is a hangover following the intensity of the four-day Whole Festival in Ferropolis, an open-air industrial museum two hours outside of Berlin. The event registers like an explosion—or maybe more accurately a release—and brings together thousands of individuals from around the world to enjoy music without bounds.

The organizers of the festival (who include the team behind Pornceptual, among other Berlin parties with worldwide appeal) just announced the next edition, set to run from July 18 to 21 next year. In collaboration with photographer Alexander Fischer, this photographic portfolio captures ephemeral moments of this past summer’s Whole, refracting the chaos of ecstasy and revelation.

Fischer’s snapshots depict the peripheries of the action, where the union of sweaty bodies slowly falls apart, and individual characters, shapes, and objects become discernible. Journeying beyond eroticism, this vision of Whole emphasizes community, self-expression, and a mix of joy and introspection.
